Jr. Naturalist After-school Program - November 2018 Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., month-long sessions for ages 6-11 Inquiry-based, hands-on learning in a safe outdoor environment. DRA Great Salt Bay Farm is on bus routes from local schools and close to Route 1. November - Birds: Discover how birds prepare for winter, dissect owl pellets, and play nature games. Support Twin Villages Foodbank Farm with a Thanksgiving Day 5K Trail Run or 1-Mile Walk/Fun Run! This is a volunteer-organized event taking place at DRA's Great Salt Bay Farm in Damariscotta. There is no fee to participate, but donations of any amount to the Foodbank Farm are encouraged! Details: Registration starts at 8:30 AM 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk/Fun Run both start at 9:00 AM The 5K course follows a broad, mown trail on two loops through fields along Great Salt Bay, with gentle, rolling hills. A regular program for homeschool families and groups. These classes are held 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon the fourth Monday of each month (except October and December). A hike and nature journaling are always included. Prepay for five classes and get a sixth class free. For ages 5 and up (younger may come). Fee: $5.00/child.  Call DRA to register. Northen Shrike

Join naturalist and DRA Education Director Sarah Gladu for a bird walk in search of the northern shrike that often visit in early winter. Shrikes, sometimes called “Butcher Birds,” are songbirds that hunt small creatures, occasionally impaling them on thorns to save for later. Depending on conditions, ice cleats may be a good idea.
