Frogs and Pollywogs For preschoolers (ages 2-5) and their parents/guardians. A hike is always included. Fall Schedule: September 20 - Bees and Butterflies Search for bees and butterflies and take home bee food (a flowering plant). October 18 - Spider safari Turn over logs and rocks and see how many spiders we can find! November 15 - Turkey Tails and Tales Search for turkeys and other birds and do an art project. Since Friday's Owl Prowl filled so quickly, we are offering a second opportunity the following evening to search for owls by the light of the full moon at Marsh River Bog in Newcastle with naturalist Sarah Gladu. We will use audio recordings to locate owls, and explore the edges of the bog. All ages are welcome! Warm clothing and ice cleats are recommended, depending on conditions. Winter Vacation Camp - Wildlife Safari December 26-28, 8:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m. (AOS 93 schools closed). For children ages 6-11. Search for animal tracks, play games and make plaster casts of tracks. Learn all about Maine’s wildlife in winter, explore forests and fields, go sledding, create art projects and do some nature journaling. Participants will need to bring snacks, lunch, and warm outdoor gear. Pre-registration is due one week before the session starts, although earlier registration is recommended as these sessions tend to fill up quickly. Fee: $135, or $120 for members at the Mussel level or above. Native plants provide shelter and food for many forms of wildlife, and support pollinators. And because they are adapted to local conditions, they often require less water and time than non-native plants. We invite you to start some wild native plantings of your own. Winter is the perfect time to do it! We will provide seeds from Wild Seed Project, as well as soil, pots, and tips for growing so you can take them home and have them ready to plant in the spring. Winter Schedule: January 17 - Footprints in the Snow Follow animal tracks in the snow and make a plaster cast to take home. February 14 - Winter Wonderland Make a snow shelter, go dogsledding, and explore a winter wonderland! These classes are held 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. the third Thursday of each month (except February). A regular program for homeschool families and groups. These classes are held 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon the fourth Monday of each month. A hike and nature journaling are always included. For ages 5 and up (younger may come). Fee: $5.00 per child. Prepay for five classes and get a sixth class free.
