Jr. Naturalist After-school Program - November 2018 Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., month-long sessions for ages 6-11 Inquiry-based, hands-on learning in a safe outdoor environment. DRA Great Salt Bay Farm is on bus routes from local schools and close to Route 1. November - Birds: Discover how birds prepare for winter, dissect owl pellets, and play nature games. Northen Shrike

Join naturalist and DRA Education Director Sarah Gladu for a bird walk in search of the northern shrike that often visit in early winter. Shrikes, sometimes called “Butcher Birds,” are songbirds that hunt small creatures, occasionally impaling them on thorns to save for later. Depending on conditions, ice cleats may be a good idea. Wild Encounters Homeschool Program – Fall 2018

A regular program for homeschool families and groups. These classes are held 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon the fourth Monday of each month (except October and December). A hike and nature journaling are always included. Prepay for five classes and get a sixth class free. For ages 5 and up (younger may come). Fee: $5.00 per child, or pay for 5 classes and get the 6th class free. December 17 - Maine's Mammals Can you tell a mink from an ermine? Fall Schedule: September 20 - Bees and Butterflies Search for bees and butterflies and take home bee food (a flowering plant). October 18 - Spider safari Turn over logs and rocks and see how many spiders we can find! November 15 - Turkey Tails and Tales Search for turkeys and other birds and do an art project. Since Friday's Owl Prowl filled so quickly, we are offering a second opportunity the following evening to search for owls by the light of the full moon at Marsh River Bog in Newcastle with naturalist Sarah Gladu. We will use audio recordings to locate owls, and explore the edges of the bog. All ages are welcome! Warm clothing and ice cleats are recommended, depending on conditions. Winter Vacation Camp - Wildlife Safari December 26-28, 8:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m. (AOS 93 schools closed). For children ages 6-11. Search for animal tracks, play games and make plaster casts of tracks. Learn all about Maine’s wildlife in winter, explore forests and fields, go sledding, create art projects and do some nature journaling. Native plants provide shelter and food for many forms of wildlife, and support pollinators. And because they are adapted to local conditions, they often require less water and time than non-native plants. We invite you to start some wild native plantings of your own. Winter is the perfect time to do it! We will provide seeds from Wild Seed Project, as well as soil, pots, and tips for growing so you can take them home and have them ready to plant in the spring.
